Fundraising in UK for Romanian orphans charity

Hi, I'm Lauren, the 2008 winner of the Hertfordshire YOPEY.

I've set up for the orphans with special needs I've worked with in Romania. I think it will be a really worthwhile project, but we need lots of money to complete it! So if anybody's interested in helping fundraise for it, please let me know (plz email me on lzw07@ic.ac.uk). There will be volunteering opportunities for working with the orphans in Romania once this project is up and running.

Before starting university, I went with a group to Romania 3 times to volunteer with orphans with special needs. The treatment of those orphans in the orphanages was so horrendous, and I can't even begin to discribe to you the suffering of those children that I witnessed out there. So myself and a girl Alex Daly (who's been out to Romania with me) have since been talking about creating a project to free those orphans that we've grown to love. We've recently begun to put that plan into action, and have created a Romanian charity called 'Close to You Association'. We have already raised money for an purchased a perfect area of land for the project, which is huge! We will be building a 3-story building. On the top floor there will accomodation for volunteers when the come to help out at the project. On the first floor we will be accomodating the 12 orphans that we'll be taking out of the orphanage and fostering, to finally give them a safe and loving home. On the ground floor we'll have a daycare centre for other orphans with special needs that we'll bring form the local orphanage on a daily basis, and here they'll receive rehabilitation and love. We're now trying to raise the money needed for the building work, which will begin in a month and, money permitting, will be finished next summer.

Thanks for reading, and I look forward to hearing from anybody who'd like to help!

Lauren xx

Borneo Fundraiser! :)

Basically... A few of my cadets and myself are going on an expedition to Borneo, a trip of a life time for most of us! We will be doing Team Building with the other cadets from around the country, Jungle Trek for 3days, Community Projects, Visiting the Kundasang War Memorial, Mountain Trek over 3 days & visiting the Orangutan Sanctuary. All of us have been preparing for this trip for months, getting our injections, new Jungle trekking equipment and preparing mentally for this trip! For us this is an amazing opportunity for us to complete out Gold Duke of Edinburgh Award, which some of you may know.. is a HUGE DEAL! When we finally pass we will get to meet the actual Duke of Edinburgh himself! SO AMAZING! As a fundraising event we are having a jungle themed party! It will be at the Heath Sporting Club its on Saturday 20th February, the tickets are £10 per person or £15 as a couple, I know this seems a bit but there will be a free raffle and some amazing prizes! To find out more about the party please look at the flier attached! Please consider it, it will be a relaxing evening, alcohol, food, music entertainment! So if anyone would like to make a donation to the cause or sponsership we would be so grateful! I would be especially grateful to you!

Katie McArthur

Re: What was judging like?

I won YOPEY beds 08. Since then I have judged at many places and other YOPEY contestants. Truthfully speaking it is very difficult to judge, especially when you have such fantastic final contestants with extraordinary stories, You cannot decide who to nominate, but I guess their can only be one winner (even though you are all winners).

One thing which I have realised is that some judging can be easy than others for e.g I am juding yopey beds 09 which is this Sunday coming! And I felt when I was judging the contestants it was clear and easy for me to see who will give back to the community and has a strong story. Overall it is a nice feeling and I am honoured to be part of YOPEY.

Thanks Tony

Re: awards process?

Hey Brown eyes,

I was the winner for Beds 08 . The whole event is is amazing! you walk in and see all the other finalists and get to meet others, in the mean time you will be asked with your family to take pictures.

A light buffet will be served and Tony Gearing will explain what you will need to do for the evening, therefore all the finalists will be split into half, as thr first half will go on the stage and the second half will take a seat. Tony will do a short presentation on what YOPEY is and how it was founded, after he will then read your article of what you have done and then ask you a question. Once this is done then the first lot take their seats and the second half of the finalist come onto the stage. The same process is repeated.

After, you have a few speeches by the judges, the winners are then annouced. In an order of third prize, runner up and then the overall winner. But do not worry you will be fine, you will have an amazing time and get recognised.

Hope that helps. Hope to see you on the night.

Sabath x

SPICE

I have been volunteering at events ever since I can remember and about 5 years ago found that I had a passion for working with disabled youngsters. Being part of guiding I helped on special needs events once a year and supported girls with special needs at our weekly guide meetings.
Since then my mum has taken on the role of county and district adviser for special needs and opened a pack especially for girls who can't attend a regular guide meeting. It is called SPICE and stands for Special People In Cambs East, I am the joint leader of this pack. We fund raise money to give disabled girls a trip or event every month including, bowling, swimming, parties, sleepovers, theatre, London eye, boat trips and much more!! My friend and I have also been awarded £50 000 to build an exciting sensory garden designed to fit the need of the girls.
We're always looking for new girls between 5 and 25 to join our adventures so if you know anybody then please contact me for further information. There is no joining fee and the trips are heavily subsidised. We are also always looking for new sponsors so that we can carry on taking these girls on new exciting adventures. So if you know of any grant givers then please let me know!

It's up to you to check these opportunities

I receive quite a few approaches from charities, TV companies and other organisations wanting to contact young people like yourselves. I am going to start posting the better ones under Opportunities on the YOPEY forum. But it is up to you to check out these organisations, discuss them with family and friends, before getting involved. YOPEY cannot be responsible for how any invite you take up unfolds...

www.itvfixers.com seeking young people to speak out

I work as a researcher for a project called ‘ITV Fixers’ www.itvfixers.com. We work with young people and offer them the opportunity to speak out about any issues they feel passionately about and want to change... the issues can be about absolutely anything and young people can get involved in the project as an individual or as a group.
We work with the young people to create their ‘fix’ whether it be leaflets to raise awareness of the issue, a short film, an event ANYTHING and support them the whole way with dedicated Youth Co-ordinators and a Creative Resource Team able to make their material how they want it... the young people also have a budget for their fixes where they decide to spend the money where they want. We also work to a timetable which suits the commitments of the young people.
Some of the fixes are picked up by the Broadcast team (who I work for) and made into 3 min broadcast items - unique as they narrate their story - not a journalist, that are featured on the local 6 pm ITV news once a month. Projects have been running successfully across the south of England for a year and ITV Fixers is now going national.
I am currently looking for a wide range of projects for young people (who can view ITV Anglia where they live) to start this summer with a big launch week for ITV Anglia in November 2009 - which can include Hertfordshire, Bedfordshire, Cambridgeshire, Norfolk, Suffolk and Essex.
So now is a good time to look at the environment, renewable energy, sustainable communities, and coastal erosion for instance. Are there young people in your area who have a passion and wish to make a difference? Here is the opportunity!
All participating Fixers will of course receive a DVD or copies of their campaign materials, a certificate and even a reference, which is all beneficial for their CV’s too.
We would love to come and visit and speak to the young people more about Fixers and I look forward to hearing back from you!
The mobile is the best way to reach me – 07967 44 33 25 or email josh@itvfixers.com

Kind Regards,

Josh.

Josh Beattie
Researcher - Broadcast
01962 670 054 (direct) / 670 370 (switchboard)
07967 44 33 25

ITV Fixers, Urban House, 41 Southgate Street, Winchester, Hants, SO23 9EH.
