Standing up to bullies, supporting a father fighting alcoholism and drugs, losing a step-brother to drink and an aunt to cancer would, each in isolation, be a major blow for anyone.

A Clacton-on-Sea teenager has faced all four in just over a year but has come back smiling and is using her experiences to inspire others at home and at school, and she is in a competition that hails the ‘giving to others’ of young Essex people.

Daisy carries on fundraising after stepdad dies

Having supported her stepdad through a serious illness 11-year-old Daisy Foster decided to carry on his fundraising after he died.

But the gig she instigated was no ordinary concert; Daisy enlisted the help of her step-uncle and musician/songwriter Nik Kershaw, who was a teen idol in the 1980s.

And Daisy has continued to support family members through traumatic times.

Caring Katie helps at home and school

Colchester schoolgirl Katie Kilpatrick-Merrett is a godsend to her mum who she helps and her two young brothers, both suffering multiple health problems.

In addition to helping prepare her brothers' food and medic, Katie has helped play an important part at her school and she also helps teach Scottish highland dancing to youngsters.
