Every Sunday afternoon the old man would wait at the window for that first glimpse of his friend coming to visit him. Before she entered the care home, Mary would always smile and wave at him.

Friendships prove there's no generation gap

Three young people visited a care home in March, Cambridgeshire, to be photographed with the elderly friends they are making through a new scheme.

The photographs marked two months since the sixth-formers from Neale Wade Academy trained as ‘YOPEY Befrienders’ to visit residents at the Springfield care home in The Causeway.

Since then six Neale Wade year 12s have visited more than 80 times and given the residents – some of them lonely and living with dementia – about 100

Befrienders join in care home exercise class

Five young people visited a care home in Dereham, Norfolk, and joined in an exercise class with elderly residents.

The exercise class marked three months since the sixth-formers from Dereham Sixth Form College (DSFC) trained as ‘YOPEY Befrienders’ to visit residents at the York House care home in Norwich Road. Since then they have visited more than 30 times and given the residents – some of them lonely and living with dementia – about 40 hours of their time.

Toy story as young discuss past playthings with elderly

About 10 young people visited a care home in Wymondham, Norfolk, to find out about toys from ‘the olden days’ from elderly residents.

The reminiscing session marked 3 months since the sixth-formers from Wymondham High Academy trained as ‘YOPEY Befrienders’ to visit residents at the Sutherlands care home in Norwich Road. Since then they have visited more than 70 times and given the residents – some of them living with dementia – nearly 120 hours of their time.

Second primary school trained to befriend care home residents

More than 30 8-10 year-olds at a West Suffolk school have been trained to be Dementia Friends and are now looking for a care home to visit in the area.

Tony and Jo Gearing, of the Stradishall-based charity YOPEY, gave an assembly about befriending lonely elderly people with dementia to all of key stage 2, about 80 children, at Wickhambrook Primary Academy in the village of the same name.
