‘Yopey’ improves image of young people

CONTESTS aimed at showing the positive side to young people today are being launched all over Britain. However, it you are reading this page, it's probably because YOPEY hasn't arrived in your town yet. Hopefully, we'll be there soon.

Meanwhile we still like to receive entries and nominations for young people in areas that don't yet have a YOPEY. We can put these on file and if we arrive in your town, can look you up and invite you to be one of the first formal entrants.

Everywhere you look nowadays young people are being condemned. It's almost as if every one of them is a binge-drinking, drug-taking, violent 'hoody'. Yet there are many young people all over the country doing wonderful things for others. It’s just that they live in the shadow of a well-publicised anti-social minority.

YOPEY is open to young people aged from 10 to 25, who 'give to others'. They can enter themselves or be nominated as individuals or groups.

Schools, colleges, youth organisations, churches, charities and other bodies that work with young people are encouraged to make nominations. If their nomination wins, they can receive half the prize money. Family and friends can also nominate but they cannot win prize money.

“With your help, YOPEY will ‘Reveal, Recognise and Reward’ fantastic young people who give to others," said YOPEY founder Tony Gearing, a former national newspaper journalist who became fed up with the negative image of young people in the media.

"YOPEY's about giving respect to young people who deserve it and setting them up as Positive Role for other young people.”
