Terms and Conditions

Mitsubishi Electric and Affinity Water Young People of the Year or “YOPEY’ in Hertfordshire is open to young people aged from 10 to 25 in 2017. They should live, work or study in Hertfordshire (1). They can be nominated by anyone who knows them or even nominate themselves for these coveted awards.

The Hertfordshire Senior Young Person of the Year, also known as the 'Senior YOPEY', aged 17-25, will receive £500 – £400 for a good cause of their choice and £100 for themselves. The Hertfordshire Junior Young Person of the Year Winner, or 'Junior YOPEY', aged 10-16, will receive £300 – £200 for their good cause and £100 for themselves. There will be other cash prizes.

The judges reserve the right to give the Senior prize to a younger person if the quality of their work exceeds that of the older entries.

All nominees will receive YOPEY certificates by email. These are good for job and university applications.

You can fill out the online nomination form above or CLICK HERE to download a form to your desktop. This can be completed on your computer – the fill-in fields are 'live' – SAVED and emailed to YOPEY. Or you can print a paper copy, fill in by pen and post to YOPEY at Woodfarm Cottage, Bury Road, Stradishall, Newmarket, Suffolk CB8 8YN.

YOPEY believes in reinforcing all winners’ good work for others by giving them money to continue this work, hence the way we share prize money. Please suggest a good cause to receive a major part of the entrant's prize-money.

A good cause is a not-for-profit body that works with young people, such as a charity or youth group, and should feature in their story. For example, a Scout leader nominating a Scout may choose their Scout troop as the good cause. The nominee may choose another good cause. A teenager fundraising for a particular charity can put forward that charity as their good cause. However YOPEY reserves the right to choose a more appropriate good cause if the presented good cause is not sufficiently related to the entry's good work.

Entries can be for individuals, pairs or groups. If entering or nominating a group input details for the group (its name, age range, address for correspondence etc) in the form. Then name individual members as you feel necessary under Why this Entry should win a YOPEY? There is no need to name every member in large groups but for twos or threes it is preferable. Pairs and group entries share the same prize.

If your entry is not acknowledged within two weeks, please call 01440 821564. If YOPEY decides to take forward your entry or nominee they and people involved in their entry will be interviewed and a story will be published on our website and offered to the media.

YOPEY entries must be prepared to take part in publicity as it is by promoting their good work that YOPEY gives the younger generation a fairer image in the media and wider society.

After this YOPEY closes to entries there may be further questions to answer and the judging takes some time. The judging is done by dozens of people, including dignitaries such as the Lord Lieutenant and High Sheriff, both of which represent Her Majesty the Queen, Mayors and MPs, and young people who have won past YOPEYs.

An Awards Ceremony will be held at a prestigious venue in the autumn. Even if the closing date has passed, please still nominate. Your entry may be given a 'wild card' entry into another YOPEY or carried over to the following year's contest!

The earlier you enter or nominate the more likely your entry and good cause are to receive positive publicity.

CERTIFICATES FOR ALL ENTRIES! All entries, verified to the satisfaction of YOPEY and providing an email address, will receive a certificate by email for taking part, whether or not they go any further in the contest.

Some YOPEYs share prizes and award ceremonies.

If a winning entry fails to take part fully in the competition, YOPEY reserves the right to put all their prize money back in the prize pot to be awarded elsewhere.

If a YOPEY prize cheque is not presented within the normal time limit allowed by banks, it will not be replaced. The prize money will go back into the prize pot to be awarded elsewhere.

If a cash prize-winner wishes to change the name/s on their cheque/s, they must return the cheque/s with a letter of explanation to YOPEY at Woodfarm Cottage, Bury Road, Stradishall, Newmarket CB8 8YN, and enclose a stamp-addressed envelope within three months of the date of the awards ceremony. It will be YOPEY’s decision whether or not the cheque is reissued in the name of the new good cause.

If a prize cheque is lost, it is the organiser's decision whether or not it is replaced. The recipient must notify the organiser within three months of the date of the awards ceremony. Any reissued cheque will have £50 deducted to cover administration and charges.

If a non-cash YOPEY prize is awarded this must be claimed within six months. Non-cash prizes cannot be exchanged for money.

All nominees that YOPEY interviews are asked to provide photographs of themselves. It is preferable to provide these as digital jpegs rather than printed photographs as YOPEY cannot guarantee to return printed photographs. Photographs provided by entries and their supporters maybe used in any publicity and become the property of YOPEY.

Entries agree to their YOPEY story and photographs staying online in perpetuity. Once a YOPEY competition is over, we do not go back and change the subsite dedicated to that year’s YOPEY. It becomes a historical record of the YOPEY in that area during that year. Please do not ask to change this historical record in the future.

The organiser’s decision in all matters is final.

(1) But they do not have to live and study in Hertfordshire. If they cross a county border to go to school, they can still qualify as an entrant to this YOPEY.
